Modhemia
Modhemia is a woman-owned jewelry business based in Brooklyn, NY that opened in 2017. Polly—the owner—connected with me in early 2019 hoping to expand her visibility through brand marketing and copywriting. I worked directly with her for several months to enhance her website navigation, strategy, and copy, while also occasionally ghostwriting pieces of content for publications. Below I have included examples of the work I completed for Modhemia during my contract.
Ghostwriting
Apply Here
Every year, Create & Cultivate offers a $5,000 scholarship through its partnership with Chandon. One local maker’s application is chosen for the prize, and I helped Modhemia participate in this contest. Similar to my project ghostwriting for Brooklyn Magazine’s 30 Under 30 nomination, I interviewed Polly and used her words and ideas to build solid answers for her application. You can read these answers here.
30 Under 30
I received an email from Polly asking if I could prepare content for Brooklyn Magazine’s 30 Under 30 2019 nomination cycle, so I did my research. After reading several 30 Under 30 interviews, I took the outline and scheduled a phone call with Modhemia hoping to get enough information to ghost write the Brooklyn Magazine submission content. You can view the content here. Unsure of whether the content would be submitted as a form or recorded during a nomination interview, I prepared answers that she could later use for either. I then used this content to gather a better understanding of what Modhemia is all about, which allowed me to write copy for her website with consistency and accuracy.
Content and UX Improvements
Revamp Champ
Using my knowledge of marketing and writing in active voice, I spent the first few months drafting new copy for Modhemia’s website. Developing the right voice and style is especially important for a young brand, and I wanted to make sure that I was not stepping on feet or putting words in mouths. After reading pages of style notes and wish lists, sifting through similar brands, I got a better handle on the desired language and tone. I used the newly developed brand voice to write website copy, email marketing copy, social media posts, and blog posts.
Final
Content Integration
After receiving the OK from Polly, I took all of the web copy and content that I had written, and integrated it into her site using an evolution of my initial mock-up navigation. You can see this content under the “About” section on the Modhemia website. About Us; What is Modhemia?; Our Approach; and Who Are We were all created and written by me, while the other pages were merely streamlined for optimal navigation.
Under the Covers
Using my knowledge of Shopify and my basic knowledge of HTML, I was able to create a “Where to Buy” page using embedded HTML to include Google Maps.
Mock-up
Visual Drafting
I used my advanced knowledge of Adobe Photoshop to create mock-ups of what the Modhemia website would look like once I completed my proposed content alterations. In the end, it was a very simple plan that I was trying to convey, and therefore I valued efficiency over quality—meaning I did not make my mock-up pretty. The mock-up would later go through several iterations as the website navigation inched closer to reality.
Marketing Consultation
Strategy
In addition to my extensive writing, editing, and branding, I created strategic marketing plans and schedules for Modhemia to follow. I served as a consultant for the business owner, teaching her about SEO, website navigation, blog integration, and networking, which laid solid groundwork for Modhemia’s future marketing.
